As you train to become a professional psychologist, it is critical that you are aware of and active in the professional organizations that exist to support the practice and science of psychology. Professional organizations are both transmitters of scholarly information on advances in the field and lobbying entities that represent practicing psychologists. They play a significant role in your development and progress as a professional psychologist.
One of the best ways to learn about the many professional associations and organizations in psychology is to visit the various associations’ and organizations’ websites. These sites provide valuable information to the psychology profession. There are several types of associations/organizations in psychology, and you should visit websites that are representative examples of each of the following:
Regulatory organizations
National and state psychological associations
Specialty associations
Your state psychological association will be a valuable resource in identifying state licensure requirements. Each state has separate requirements for licensure, and it is your responsibility to ensure your eligibility for licensure. Completion of the clinical psychology program at Walden does not automatically license you as a psychologist. In addition, completion of the Walden clinical psychology program of study does not guarantee eligibility for licensure in your state. It is critical this week that you read over your specific state’s licensure requirements so that you are aware of your eligibility and any challenges you might face and so that you can prepare yourself to meet each requirement.
