Essay Proposal

Drawing on your experience with the midterm essay proposal, write a 3-4 page proposal for your final project. Your proposal should look a bit like your midterm essay–that is, it should identify and illustrate the topic, it should offer an initial assessment and analysis, it should be framed theoretically, and it should assert the significance of your ideas.

In your proposal, identify the question that you have about the texts you’re working with and how they relate to one another. Describe why you have reason to be interested in this topic; that is, how is the topic presented in the novels you’re working with? Why is it significant to you, or to a larger human audience? What key theoretical ideas and methodology will you draw on, and how? What initial research have you done? What else will you need to do? What is your initial hypothesis about the topic?

In addition to these criteria, your proposal should be formatted in MLA style, and it should be well-written, with a minimum of grammatical and stylistic errors. It should also be clearly organized in a logical, thoughtful way. DO NOT bullet-point your proposal; it should be an essay, with topic sentences, transitions, introduction, conclusion, evidence, and so on. It must also include a works consulted list in MLA format of your initial research.

Requirements:
•Offer an overview of your topic by describing how your topic appears in the texts you’re working with
•Offer a clear statement of the topic’s significance for you or to the larger human community
•Identify key theoretical ideas and approaches you will be taking, and why/how they will be useful
•Describe your initial research on the subject and what other topics or areas of interest you will want to learn more about
•Present your initial hypothesis
•The proposal must be 3-4 pages in length, plus a list of works consulted
•The proposal must be well-written, with a minimum of grammatical and stylistic errors, and organized in a logical, thoughtful way.
•The proposal should include a tentative working title

The two novels are Coetzee’s FOE, and Daniel Defoe’s ROBINSON CRUSOE.
