Write a thoughtful and well-documented essay that answers the following questions:
Some historians have spoken of different national Atlantics—an African Atlantic, a British Atlantic, and a French Atlantic.  How did each group view the Neirsee’affair? Was there a distinctly British, French or African view of the event? Consider similarities and/differences between the three nationalities as well as the various positions held by members within each group—diplomats, colonial officials, naval captains, sailors, and slaves.
Papers should be approximately or 900-1200 words or 3-4 pages. Base your formal essay on the primary documents and narrative in the graphic novel, Inhuman Traffick: The International Struggle Against the Transatlantic Slave Trade by Rafe Blaufarb and Liz Clarke; NO OUTSIDE RESEARCH. Use a basic font such as arial or times new roman, in 11 or 12 point size, and double spaced lines. Grading will be determined by both essay content and quality of writing. This essay requires the use of footnotes and should use the Chicago Manual of Style citation format.
This essay will count as ten percent of your final grade. Late essays will be penalized one full letter grade for everyday that they are overdue.

Thesis: Any paper should include a clear position statement. The thesis statement is an excellent place to start, because it gives the essay boundaries and an overall theme. It should be placed in the introductory paragraphs.
Organization: A paper must demonstrate a definite pattern of argument, which is supported by the evidence. Often an essay map, or a statement in the introductory paragraph detailing the general arguments of the papers, will help keep the author and reader on track. Writing an outline is also recommended, in order to have a clear vision of your papers objectives in each section.
Content: Essays should demonstrate an understanding of the course material germane to the question being addressed. This is the major part of the paper and where supporting evidence should be presented and adamantly defended. The best defenses use specific examples from the text.
Grammar: Papers should not contain repeated spelling, grammar, or punctuation errors. These mishaps can be best avoided by proofreading and peer reviews.
