Literary Analysis
Purpose: For this first formal essay you will embark upon deeper analysis of the literature studied, by applying the psychological theories of the Human Psyche covered in class to help you better understand literary characters or themes. You will select a theory posed about the Human Psyche, either Psychoanalytic (Sigmund Freud) or Humanist (Viktor Frankl), and use this theory as a lens to analyze either character motivation in a piece of short fiction, or theme in a piece of short fiction or collection of poems. Your goal is to analyze character motivation or theme by citing the chosen literary work(s) against the philosophical framework presented by either Freud
Choice One: Character Analysis or Theme in Short Fiction
If you choose to analyze themes or character motivations in a short piece of fiction using the theoretical principles, you may select from the stories discussed in this unit: bartleby, the scrivener pages 622 to 648
Theme: Your thesis should attempt to deepen the reader’s understanding of the theme or central idea of a chosen literary work by analyzing these components against one of the philosophical frameworks of the human psyche.
All papers must be: typed, double-spaced, in Times New Roman font, and 3-5 pgs in length.
-Papers must include text citations from both literary and theoretical works, and provide thoughtful and thorough analysis of quoted literature.
-Text citations must adhere to MLA formatting guidelines.
-All papers must include an MLA formatted Works Cited page.
