The Perspective of the WHO Determinants of Health

  • 2nd part of Section A: The Perspective of the WHO Determinants of Health
  • Entire Section B: Philosophical Perspective on Determinant of Health

This is some information of this term paper for Section A and B:

=================

The students will describe all of the determinants of health in their health assessment and in Section A; they will then select one determinant of health to elaborate upon for the purpose of their paper. The determinants of health are based upon the World Health Organization (WHO) (2013) categories:

  • Income and social status – higher income and social status are linked to better health. The greater the gap between the richest and poorest people, the greater the differences in health.
  • Education – low education levels are linked with poor health, more stress and lower self-confidence.
  • Physical environment – safe water and clean air, healthy workplaces, safe houses, communities and roads all contribute to good health. Employment and working conditions – people in employment are healthier, particularly those who have more control over their working conditions
  • Social support networks – greater support from families, friends and communities is linked to better health. Culture – customs and traditions, and the beliefs of the family and community all affect health.
  • Genetics – inheritance plays a part in determining lifespan, healthiness and the likelihood of developing certain illnesses. Personal behaviour and coping skills – balanced eating, keeping active, smoking, drinking, and how we deal with life’s stresses and challenges all affect health.
  • Health services – access and use of services that prevent and treat disease influences health
  • Gender – men and women suffer from different types of diseases at different ages.

Section A. Patient Presentation

The students will write a complete and thorough presentation of a patient in one of their N4032 clinical settings wherein all abnormal data is addressed and academic references (ex. medical texts, dictionaries) are used to understand their patient’s health condition(s). This patient assessment will include the patient’s admitting diagnosis, health history and an explanation of how each of the seven determinants of health may be impacting their health. Students will discuss all abnormal patient data in their paper and refer the reader to the appendix to review their complete patient health assessment.

Section B. Philosophical Perspective on Determinant of Health

The students will explicitly state which determinant of health they are going to focus on for this next section of their paper. The students will select a philosophical perspective from which to base their analysis from one of the three BCIT Baccalaureate Nursing Curriculum Philosophies: phenomenology, critical social theory, or humanism. The students will draw on scholarly literature (minimum three references) to support their understanding of the philosophy and their interpretation of the determinant of health. Students will also draw on their patient’s data to support their analysis. Some of the questions that students may consider to explore their patient’s chosen determinant of health under one of the philosophical perspectives are:

Phenomenology

  • What is the lived experience of your patient both in and out of hospital?
  • How does your patient interpret or understand their experience?
  • How does your data support your interpretation of your patient’s lived experience?
  • How does the literature help you to understand your patient’s lived experience?

Critical Social Theory

  • How has cultural/social/political history shaped your patients health experience?
  • How does our society influence your patient’s health experience today? What biases or obstacles do they face?
  • Are there any political (ex. laws, health care structures, government programs) or social (ex. religious, social norms, cultural norms) structures that oppress or disadvantage your patient?
  • Are there any power structures that are leaving your patient disempowered in their health experience?
  • How does the literature support your patient’s oppression or their need for empowerment?

Humanism

  • How is your patient living this experience from their own, unique perspective? What does this mean to them?
  • What kind of meaning do you derive from their experience from your perspective?
  • How can the nurse-patient relationship influence your patient’s experience of health? What literature supports this?
  • How has this patient shaped your own perspective on health and illness?
  • How was humanism evident in your nursing care of this patient?
