Your assignment is to write an essay of at least five full pages but no more than seven full pages in length, following the directions for Chapter Exercise 1 at the end of Chapter 2 (page 50) and using the attached information about unionization of Starbucks workers as the basis for your discussion.
You don’t have to discuss every theory outlined in the chapter; choose the ones you think are most relevant, and discuss why or how the theories explain the situation in the news story. Based on your analysis using the theories, you should also explain how you think the situation might turn out, and why you hold that opinion.
Paraphrased or quoted material from any secondary sources – including the textbook and online sources – must be cited in the body of the paper and in a reference list, correctly using APA format.
Your essay must be typed and double-spaced, and must use 12-point font. Please include a title page with your name, student number, course and section number, and assignment title. Special bindings or folders for the assignment pages are not necessary, but please staple the pages together. Unstapled assignments (this includes paper clips) will NOT be accepted.
These guidelines will be used in grading the essay:
“A†range: demonstrates understanding of the material; theories applied accurately with clear and reasonable explanations of their relevance to the situation; no significant problems with grammar, spelling, readability, or citation formatting.
“B†range: demonstrated understanding of the majority of the material; most of the theories applied accurately and appropriately, but some explanation or reasoning may be incomplete or difficult to follow; consistent grammar, spelling, readability or citation formatting problems that are easily identifiable and correctable.
“C†range: no clear demonstration of understanding of the material; problems in comprehending or applying the theories; unclear explanations or reasoning; significant problems with grammar, spelling, readability or citation formatting that affect the overall quality of the discussion.
Remember that spellchecking and grammar checking won’t catch everything. You should edit and proofread the essay yourself before submitting it.
The assignment is worth 15% of your course grade. The deadline for submitting the assignment is Oct. 2, at the beginning of class; the course outline contains the policies on late assignments. Please let me know if you have questions or problems.
