This is a compare and contrast paper. You must compare three video performances of the “to be or not to be” soliloquy, which can be found on-line. (Google “to be or not to be” and many will come up.) There are really three parts to the paper: what is the speech supposed to do or convey or make us feel/think, compare the three versions and then choose the one that best accomplishes what you think the speech is supposed to do. This paper will be 500-750 words long, which is 2-3 pages double spaced. It is expected that the paper will be thoroughly proofread before submission making it as close to error-free as you can. Your name must be on the paper with pages stapled. The grading of the paper is as follows: a clear declaration of what the speech is about and what it is supposed to do to us, the audience. This is about 25% of the paper. The bulk of the paper, 50%, is the comparison of the various versions. The comparison might include: acting, movement, appeal, costumes, lights, music, style, camera work, etc. Finally, you must choose a version that you think accomplishes what you set in the beginning of the paper. This is 25%. As this is not a writing course my focus will be on your thinking.
