Book Review of Konrad H. Jarausch, After Hitler: Recivilizing Germans, 1945-1995
Book Review Guidelines:
Length: The review should be 3000 words in length. You may extend the length of the paper if it benefits your analysis of the book.
Format: Your paper must be double-spaced and have one-inch margins. The text should be in a standard face, such as Times New Roman, and be no larger than 12 point font. Number the pages in the upper right hand corner. Use Microsoft Word only.
Structure of review: your book review should be organized into proper essay form (introduction, body, conclusion). This is the most common problem associated with most students papers the lack of organization.
I. Introduction This is where you outline your topic, introduce the themes that you will address, and present your thesis. Your thesis is the main argument that you will make in the body of your paper. A thesis statement tells the reader what the paper is about so the reader will not be left guessing.
II. Main Body This is the largest part of the paper. It should contain the narrative that supports your thesis. It should have recognizable structure and organization.
III. Conclusion This summarizes your analysis and ties the sections together. Moreover, it should leave the reader with a sense of resolution. This is not the place to introduce new information.
Content of review: the book review should consist of four elements:
I. The summary of the books content. In this element, you should present the books thesis and main themes. You should explain salient points in the authors argument. You should also include information on the sources that the author consulted and the books intended audience. This will the largest component of your review. Note: when you use a quotation from the book, please cite the page number in parentheses at the end of the sentence.
II. Information about the author and the authors qualifications as an author.
III. A summary of how the book was received by the academic world. This means you will need to consult the academic book reviews of the book that you are reviewing. You will need to cite these sources appropriately in endnotes.
IV. The final component is your analysis of the book. What did you think about the authors argument? Why? Do you have any specific and insightful comments about the book or the author? Please note that a comment such as this book was really boring is not appropriate or insightful.
Footnote vs. Endnote: Footnotes are at the bottom of the page where the source is referenced and endnotes are grouped at the end of the paper. Except for location, they are the same thing. For your book review, please use endnotes. Microsoft Word has an easy-to-use endnote function. Place your cursor at the end of the sentence that you wish to footnote. For Microsoft Word, click on Insert, Reference, Footnote, select Endnote, and press Insert. You should then enter your reference information. See the following examples for proper form:
