Introduction to Corona Virus

This module will contain the course’s objectives, which underpins the history of the coronavirus, the cause, spread, the signs and symptoms of the disease. The course module will also focus on the classification of the symptoms to depict different stages of development of the virus in the body and how to recognize them. It also aims at training the frontline medical workers on how to check and evaluate the significant problems associated with this virus and how it affects different individuals. Finally, the module teaches the best ways to design achievable targets on strategies to reduce the virus’s spread and critical areas that need significant attention. Everyone is vulnerable to contracting the virus, and therefore needs we all need to take precautionary measures to prevent spread and avoid contracting the disease categories and a pandemic.

Objectives of the course

By the end of this course, the learner should be able:

To understand how Corona Virus was initiated.

To recognize and classify the signs and symptoms of Corona Virus.

To check and evaluate the major problems associated with the virus.

To design a plan to reduce the spread of the virus.

How Corona Virus was Initiated

Coronavirus originates from a family of viruses causing illnesses affecting respiratory systems. The virus, also known as novel coronavirus, has never been identified to affect human beings before 2019 December. Scientists named the new virus SARS-CoV-2 and the disease it causes COVID-19. The virus was transmitted from animals to human beings, and the research has not yet established how it happened; the investigations into this are ongoing.

Recognizing and classifying the signs and symptoms of Corona Virus

Symptoms associated with Coronavirus vary among individuals, with some showing no signs at all, others mild, and others are greatly affected. Symptomatic patients show symptoms which include but not limited to headache, sore throat, running nose, reduced sense of smell and taste, breathing difficulties, fatigue, and nausea. Most people and young children affected by the virus recover fully, but reinfection instances have not been established. Still, the elderly those above 65 years and persons with underlying medical conditions whose immunity is compromised might not recover quickly from the virus.

Checking and evaluating the major problems

Covid-19 pandemic has resulted in enormous problems. Its intensely felt effects are on the socio-economic dynamic. The spread rate leads to a halt in international trips, resulting in a pause in global business. Countries placed parts of their regions into partial or total lockdowns to stop or reduce the spread. These actions resulted in a significant increase in joblessness and economic crisis among the middle and the low-class income citizens. Patients infected with the disease faced stressful moments of fear, with others losing their lives to the disease. People lost their loved ones with illness striking harder in some countries than others. The virus causes economic crises by taking countries a significant part of their future years to recover fully.

Design to reduce the spread

Covid-19 is transmitted easily from person to person through pieces of tiny droplets from an infected person. These droplets, when inhaled, or gets into the eyes or the mouth of a non-infected person, they get the infection. To reduce the spread, any person suspected of being exposed to the virus is advised to self-isolate for fourteen days. And any person who feels any sign or symptoms related to those of Covid-19 should call a medical doctor and cover the mouth and the nose with a cloth mask, scarfs, or handkerchiefs while coughing sneezing. Nurses should protect themselves with proper protective gear when they are attending to patients.
