Question
Revisit Chapter 10 in Lester and Lester. Write an academic title for your paper (see 10C p. 171-172), and after you have drafted the complete paper, review it carefully for unity and coherence (p. 174), proper tense (p. 174-175), third person voice (p. 177), and the language of your discipline (p. 175-176).
Write an entry about decisions you made about your thesis (to keep it or to change it, and why, see p. 10b, 168-171), your title (how did you choose it?), and what you noticed that needed fixing as you proofread your draft before posting it on the workshop discussion board. Also go back to Chapters 7, 11, and 14-17and review their suggestions for avoiding plagiarism, blending in source material, and documentation in your discipline. Discuss in your entry what you noticed in your own draft that needed fixing.
Answer
After drafting my paper, I conducted a review to confirm that I had followed all the assignment requirements as had been indicated in the checklist. The first decision that I had to make was on the title. I had to have an appropriate title that reflected the theme that was contained in the paper. I had a tentative title “Architecture around the World” that I felt suited the main talking points of the paper. I had made a decision to write about the modern architectural style and how it has been affected by modern culture in relation to ancient architecture, the impact of the professional architectural bodies, and the effect of technology on the modern practice of architecture. I felt that my themes in the paper were well captured in the title even after doing a review of the work and thus did not change the title.
A thesis is important because it helps to drive the discussion throughout the paper. A review of my draft helped me to realize that the thesis statement that I had developed did not provide an argumentative position. I, therefore, modified it to provide an argument. In this case, the thesis statement was modified to provide an argument that modern architectural styles do not reflect any particular culture because they borrow from various cultures to come up with a unique style. The change of the thesis statement necessitated a change in some topic sentences to reflect the main argument. I added a few examples in some of my paragraphs to make the argument clearer.
I also made sure that my references blended well with the discussions that had been provided. To avoid plagiarism, I cited my entire sources in the paper utilizing the recommended style of citation which was APA. I ensured that the formatting style of the paper was consistent to the requirements that were provided. In the end, I believe I have developed a paper that provides a position and argues for it. The paper is also well formatted in accordance with the provided guidelines.
