Community Based Population Need
A health-centered learning need in my community is education on prevention of childhood obesity. Currently I live in a subdivision that has its own elementary school. However, our community lacks organized sports to help fight against childhood obesity. We have a playground and a walking trail that allows kids to ride their bikes. Since it is easy for parents to become disconnected because of work, more kids are staying indoors watching TV, taking on their cell phones, and playing video games.
Mobile Application
A mobile application that I used in the past and that I think will beneficial is a Fitbit. The Fitbit tracks your steps, distance, calories burned, hourly activity and stationary time (Fitbit, 2016). When developing my program, every child will have a Fitbit so that their daily activity can be tracked. This technology will help keep the children to stay motivated to reach their daily goals.
Childhood obesity
In the United States, childhood obesity is a big problem that is increasing their risk for poor health (CDC, 2016). Although there is no easy solution to the obesity epidemic in children (CDC, 2016). A multifaceted approach must me taking to this complex issue (CDC, 2016). A lot of policy makers, state and local organizations, business and community leaders, school, childcare and healthcare professionals, and individuals must work together to create a healthier life style for our youth (CDC, 2016). Presently, obesity in children is causing a wide range of health problems that before weren’t seen until adulthood (American Heart Association , 2015). Diseases like hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and high cholesterol levels (American Heart Association , 2015). These include high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes and elevated blood cholesterol levels (American Heart Association , 2015). Also they are psychological effects, for example obese children are more prone to low self-esteem, negative body image and depression (American Heart Association , 2015).
Power Point Presentation
First, I will begin my PowerPoint presentation by stated that childhood obesity is a major issue in the United States. The next slide would explain how as a community we can fight against childhood obesity. The following slide explain how the children will be given a Fitbit to wear. Fitbit has a program that the community kids and parents can join and their activity, nutrition, weight loss is share within the group. This slide will have detail instructions how to program the Fitbit to their phone and how to join the community program. The next slide will have the community volunteers’ information to answers concerns or questions and to also keep the children and parents motivated. The last slide will include prizes the children could win if they complete the program.
