Please read Chapter 8 of Pielke’s book (available on Canvas). This assignment will be evaluated by the instructor based on the students’ critiques of this assigned paper, as well as writing skills.
Due date for the critique is Dec. 1st 6pm. Please upload one electronic copy (word or pdf format) to Canvas-Assignment- Reading Critiques 2 AND bring a hard copy to the class of that day.
Assignment Expectation:
1. The critiques should be 1-page maximum, single space with font 12.
2. First, please summarize the main points of the article briefly: Assume the reader has not and will not read the article and that you are the sole mediator for their understanding of article.
3. Then thoughtfully evaluate the article from two perspectives:
a. Positive critiques include what do you like most about the article; Do you think the argument is convincing, and why; Do you think the evidence is consistent with his/her main conclusion, and why; and so forth.
b. Negative critiques include what’s missing in the argument; is the evidence sufficient to draw the conclusion and why; and so forth.
The purpose of this assignment is to help students enhance their critical thinking and writing skills. I just give several examples to guide you to critically reading, thinking and writing. You are more than welcome to make other critiques about the paper.
I will not evaluate your writing but it may have some fudge points bonus (maximum 5 points) if your writing is well organized, consistent and concise.
