LSH-2223 – Introduction to Ethics

In this project you will have to write a 1,000-1,500 word referenced report answering an ethical issue. This is an individual project.  Choose one of these topics. These topics are international issues, but should also be related to the UAE in your report.

 

  1. Modernization – is the rapid modernization of a country morally justified?
  2. Nuclear Energy– is nuclear power or energy morally justified?
  3. Health Care – is it immoral to make people pay for health care?
  4. Social Media – should the use of social media be restricted and controlled?
  5. Education – should co-education be introduced in the UAE?
  6. Health and Social Work – is it ethical to require that the elderly be relocated for care at government health facilities?
  7. Downloading – is downloading copyrighted material immoral?
  8. Drones – should governments be allowed to use drones for military purposes?
  9. Programme topics – a topic agreed with your teacher

Deadlines

The report is due in Week 12.

Before you submit the report you will have to run it through Safe Assign and receive the report that Safe Assign generates. Submit to your teacher:

  • Research Report (printed copy AND electronic copy in J Drive Drop Folder)
  • Safe Assign feedback report
  • Completed HCT Cover Sheet

Report Sections

Your report should have the following sections. (See the example in the G Drive for more details on the type of content to include.)

 

  • Cover Page – name / ID / course / title / date / teacher / word count

 

  1. Introduction – a brief introduction to the issue you have chosen and why

 

  1. Background – present your research on the main issues involved

 

  1. Ethical Dilemma – describe clearly the two sides of the ethical dilemma(s)

 

  1. Theoretical responses – choose three ethical theories we have covered in the course. Describe how they might respond to this issue.

 

  1. Personal Response – describe your position and relate it to ethical principles and an ethical theory and show how those support it. You should use good moral reasoning here.

 

  1. Conclusion

 

  • References list – a separate page with all sources in APA format (a minimum of 2 reliable sources)

 

Formatting

Your report should follow these formatting rules:

  • Use 12 point font size (Arial or times)
  • Headings should be 14 point font size and in CAPITALS
  • Line spacing should be at 2.0 (double-spaced)
  • New paragraphs and after/before headings should have one line space
  • Include at least 2 different reliable sources
  • Include a separate References list with all your sources (you can use Word Referencing or Noodle Tools for this) – this must be in APA
  • Include in-text references in your report for all your sources
