Most weeks, you will do self-assessments from each chapter. Keep the results, and combine these with any additional research you choose to explore concerning human behavior. These “private†learnings should be treated like a personal journal.
1. Describe your results from at least seven of these assessments. Assessments can also come from viewing videos etc.
2. What strengths and weaknesses were revealed by these assessments?
3. What can you do to improve these skills?
4. Are you surprised by your results? Why or why not?
In your conclusion, summarize how you might be able to apply what you learned here to your own work experience and career goals.
Guidelines for Learning from these Self-Assessments:
None of these self-assessments identifies “good” or “bad” traits. They are non- judgmental and intended to help you identify those qualities you currently possess which may be helpful in your managerial career so you can strengthen them and identify areas in which you are not so strong and which you can work to improve.
The assessments can be powerful learning tools. To get the full benefit of them, follow these guidelines:
•Be honest. Try to avoid the trap of figuring out how you “should” answer each question to be politically or socially correct. Answer what you really think or feel or do.
•Look for unusual, unexpected outcomes. Only paying attention to the results that support your current self-image won’t teach you much. Go back to questions with surprising results and try to determine why you answered as you did. This will guide you in determining where you need to improve and possibly some ways to do so.
•When you find any area for improvement, put some serious thought into ways that you could improve. Make concrete plans for how to improve the identified area.
You’re “deliverable†in week 10 is an 8-10 page reflection paper of what you have learned about yourself with respect to your career strengths and need for development. I expect that you will also integrate course concepts into this self-reflection paper with proper citations and references in support of your personal insights.
This is a private document and will only be shared with me as a confidential document. Most professionals spend more time selecting their next vehicle than they do considering their own career journey and what they need to do for themselves. I think you will find this exercise to be enlightening.
