Assessment brief:Â Â
                      Â
You are required to write a report about the scope of the human resource (HR) management function in hospitality organisations. The assessment is broken into three main sections and you need to justify all your viewpoints by referring to hospitality and human resources management literature. A minimum of TEN (10) ACADEMIC sources are required for this assessment.
Part One
Â
The hospitality literature suggests that a lack of training coupled with an absence of clear career paths across the sector, among other contributing factors, results in poor rates of retention in hospitality organisations. Discuss THREE (3) key Human Resources Management (HRM) challenges for contemporary hospitality Human Resource Managers, which are identified by hospitality academics.
Justify your reasoning by referring to hospitality specific literature. Use SIX (6) to NINE (9) articles from the year 2008 onwards, for this section (2-3 articles per challenge).
Part Two
Â
Describe the concept of high-performance work systems (HPWSs) and high-performance work practices (HPWPs), which form part of one strategic management approach. Explain and justify whether this approach is appropriate to respond to the challenges within the hospitality industry that you have identified in the previous section. Outline ONE (1) advantage and ONE (1) disadvantage of HPWSs and ONE (1) advantage and ONE (1) disadvantage of HPWPs in this context. You must support your reasoning by referring to the general HRM and hospitality specific literature.
Use THREE (3) articles/academic texts for this section dating from the year 2001. The supporting articles may be the sources used in discussing the part one challenges.
Part Three
Â
In your textbook (pages 4 and 6), Rudman (2010) divides the activities (also referred to as tasks or functions) carried out by a human resources manager into FOUR (4) categories: 1) staffing the organisation 2) managing people and performance 3) developing people and performance and 4) rewarding people and performance. Explain TWO (2) of these activities (managing people and performance and developing people and performance) and how this can assist with creating a high performing and committed workforce in hospitality organisations. Link your discussion to the points you made in section two of the assessment. Justify your reasoning by referring to the general and hospitality specific literature. Use your textbook for this section and a minimum of THREE (3) articles/texts that date from the year 2002.
A list of resources will be given in class.
