In this assignment you need to:
- Research and identify what specific significant technological/engineering advances occurred in the field of X- ray mammography, and organise these in chronological order (year wise).
- Describe, using diagrams where helpful, each advancement. You are describing the actual technology here (eg: describe a new target construction, or new image receptor design or technology). You should not attempt to ‘explain’ the physical working (‘mode of action’) of the particular equipment. The emphasis should be on clear and accurate description.
- Explain the mode of action of the technology. What physics concepts or logical ideas are used? In this ‘explanation segment’ of work, you need to also address specifically how the new technology affects the image quality/breast dose ratio. By this, is meant not to find a ‘number value’ of this ratio, but rather see how either increasing the image quality or reducing the mean glandular dose to the breast will increase this ratio. It’s quite feasible that there can be a rise in breast dose, but also a much larger increase in image quality, that increases then this ratio.

Make a slideshow presentation. Pay attention to accurate ordering of historical advances. Also you need to try and include and find out about all significant advances, identifying what those are yourself. The history of mammography is not really a long one, only ‘significantly’ beginning in the latter half of the last century but it has seen plenty of advancements in technology, as many applications have in the past few decades.
