Aviation Security

The terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 (9/11), focused attention on America’s aviation systems. By one count, there are “51,000 Transportation Security Officers (TSOs), Transportation Security Inspectors, and Behavior Detection Officers [who] serve on the frontlines at more than 450 U.S. airports” (http://www.dhs.gov/aviation-security).

This section will provide you the opportunity to consider the actions taken by agencies within the United States to secure the aviation network since 2001. Part of the underlying concern is the tradeoffs between additional measures that may be perceived as personal invasion, costs of such systems, and more importantly, the success of those systems. The failure of intelligence and law enforcement agencies to cooperate was a major issue that surfaced in the investigation following the 9/11 terror attacks.

Assignment 3   Airport Security

Before travelers board an aircraft, they must process through an airport and its security now provided by the Transportation Security Agency (TSA). The screening process has changed a great deal for the typical traveler since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. In addition, the security screening of corporate or private airplane travelers is much different from travelers who travel on the major airlines.

Resources

•Krzykowski, B. (2010).

Main Task: Analyze Airport Screening and Security

Assume that you are a member of the TSA staff in Washington, DC. Compare and contrast the security required of a traveler on an airline versus general aviation. What changes would you recommend to these security process and policies, if any? Is airport security screening now adequate? Provide your analysis in a PowerPoint briefing for newly hired TSA staff members assigned to the Washington, DC area. As a minimum, address the following issues:

•Private versus government screeners

•Personnel screening

•Baggage screening

•Risks encountered during each category of screening

Incorporate appropriate animations, transitions, and graphics as well as “speaker notes” for each slide. The speaker notes may be comprised of brief paragraphs or bulleted lists.

Support your presentation with at least 5 scholarly resources. In addition to these specified resources, other appropriate scholarly resources may be included.

Length: 12-15 slides (with a separate reference slide)

Notes Length: 200-350 words for each slide

Be sure to include citations for quotations and paraphrases with references in APA format and style. Save the file as PPT with the correct course code information. Upload the completed assignment in the Activities area of the course.
